Ransomware Targets Data Backups

TechRadar reports that ransomware attacks are now targeting data backups with encryption in addition to main systems. That means it’s more crucial than ever for healthcare clinics to safeguard their data. This shift in strategy gives attackers more leverage to demand higher ransoms, knowing that organizations might not have a fallback option.

To protect your clinic, consider these steps:

  1. Use a multi-layered security approach, including firewalls, antivirus software, and email filtering.
  2. Avoid the use of email – it is the entry point for most ransomware attacks.
  3. Regularly update and patch all systems to close security vulnerabilities.
  4. Train staff on cybersecurity best practices to recognize and avoid phishing attempts.

Ensuring your backups are disconnected from your main network when not actively in use and secured off-site when the office is closed can also reduce risk. Off-site backups are also protected from threats such as fire or flood, as well as theft from break-ins.
