Transmission Security
What is Transmission Security?
Transmission security refers to the measures used to protect electronic data, especially ePHI, while it is being transmitted across networks. Under HIPAA, transmission security is a required safeguard when sending PHI electronically.
Examples of Transmission Security Measures
These safeguards may include:
- Encrypted email
- Secure messaging platforms
- Protected file transfers
- Secure web portals
Why Transmission Security Is Critical
Data is most vulnerable while in motion. Even strong storage controls cannot protect PHI with certainty if it’s transmitted insecurely. Training staff to recognize when secure transmission is required, as well as what counts as ‘secure enough’, is essential to compliance.
